Voices of Our City Choir

The expanding Voices of our City Choir in San Diego enables homeless people to create a family through singing with others in a choir. The result? A sense of belonging, self-esteem, a feeling of purpose, the notion that someone cares about them, and a strong desire to better their lives by seeking counseling, work, and a place to live.

Brass for Africa

MusicPower is funding Brass for Africa’s efforts to enter the largest refugee camp in Africa (Bidibidi) with its music programs. Life in a refugee camp offers little to look forward to, but Brass for Africa will help change this by providing music teachers, organizing performances, and hosting mobile music laboratories where students in different areas can have access to creating new music. The Bidibidi camp currently shelters 280,000 displaced individuals and, in keeping with Brass for Africa’s model, some students will progress to becoming paid music teachers in the program.

Sounds of Palestine

Sounds of Palestine helps Palestinian kids in refugee camps discover hope and joy through developing music skills in choir, violin, cello, flute, clarinet, and more. The children are able to learn in a safe environment where they are respected, supported, and can experience cooperation and teamwork. Founded in Bethlehem and inspired by the El Sistema model originating in Venezuela, Sounds of Palestine also hosts powerful orchestra performances by the kids which create a strong sense of pride among Palestinian families within their communities.
